Son of Jacob and Catharine (Kinnan) Ainey. Born in Dimock, Susquehanna County, Pa., March 26, 1838. His early years were spent on a farm, and the educational advantages of Dimock Academy, Harford University and Montrose Academy were improved by him. In June 1863, he enlisted in Captain C.C. Halsey's company of volunteer militia, and was in the service thirty five days. He read medicine with his brother, Dr. D.C. Ainey, of New Milford, and attended his first course of lectures at the University of Michigan in 1864-65 and his second at the MEdical Department of Yale College in 1866-67; receiving the degree of M.D. in the latter year. He practiced a short time at New Milford, and removed to Brooklyn, Pa., in August 1867, where he enjoyed a large and successful practice. On December 8, 1875, he married L. Maria Haight of Birchardville, Pa.
