Son of Joseph Gray and Susan Brown.

On 30 Jun 1847 Joseph, 24, declared an intention of marriage to Clara H. Bassett, 18, daughter of John B. Bassett and Clarissa H. Perviere, at Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts.

Joseph and Clara were enumerated in the 1850 US Federal census on 27 Aug 1850 at Danvers, MA.

On 2 Sep 1861 Joseph mustered into service with the 1st Company Massachusetts Sharpshooters. He was 39 years and 1 day old.

Joseph and John Price 3rd, who would become in-laws when two of their children married, served together in the 1st Company, Andrew Sharpshooters.

On 27 Jan 1863 Joseph ended military service with the 1st Massachusetts Sharpshooters being discharged for wounds.

He applied for and received a veteran's pension on 5 Feb 1867.

Joseph and his family continued to live in Salem until he died on 12 Jun 1873 at Salem, MA. He was 50 years, 9 months and 11 days old.

On 12 Oct 1874 Clara received a widow's pension based on Joseph's service.

Clara, his wife, outlived Joseph and died on 7 Feb 1878 at Peabody, Essex County, Massachusetts, at age 49.
