Marjorie Elizabeth Cox
November 17, 1931 - August 23, 2020

Marjorie Elizabeth Cox, 88, passed away peacefully at her home in San Diego CA, Sunday August 23, 2020. Marge was born November 17, 1931 in the farm home of her parents George E and L Elizabeth (Parks) Johnson in the Asbury community southeast of Keytesville MO.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years James E Cox of the home, a sister Mary F (Johnson) Novinger of Kirksville MO and a sister-in-law Susie Cox of Lee's Summit MO.

Left to carry on Marge's legacy are two nieces and two nephews, and their families. Nieces: Sara Cox Clark (Doug and step daughter Madison) and Jane Ann Novinger Perry (Lindall, and 5 children Austin (fiancé Deanna), Andrew (Amanda), Alan (Hannah and daughters Leah and Ava), Kyle, and Laura). Nephews: James Novinger (Lanna, and 2 children Brooke and Grant) and Mark Novinger (Marla).

Preceding her in death were her parents, an infant brother, niece Carolyn Novinger, brothers-in-law Ronald F Cox and Gail H Novinger, and her husband's parents, Raymond E and Virginia (Finnell) Cox.

Growing up as a farm girl, surviving the droughts of 1934 and 1936, and becoming a good student, all during the Depression, these were the experiences that instilled in Marjorie the values that shaped her life. She started her education in rural Hurt School, just few feet from her childhood home, and would spend the next 61 years in the classroom. She graduated from Salisbury High school in 1949 where she had been active in the publication of the high school yearbook and the school paper, served as class treasurer and played trombone for 4 years, all in addition to being an honor student. Marjorie graduated with honors from Northeast Missouri Teachers College in 1953 with a degree in Math Education.

After graduation, Marge started her career teaching math 5 years in Macon, MO. During that time, she reconnected with a boy she met in second grade at Hurt School. Jim Cox was home from a Navy furlough, and on June 2, 1957 they were married. They moved to San Diego where she taught upper level math at Pacific Beach Junior High for 40 years. She saw many changes in her field, and enjoyed being on the cutting edge of those innovations. Most exciting was the introduction of computers both to the classroom, and their use in geometry and design.

Marge's life was full of activities and hobbies. She loved taking walks along the Pacific Beach, driving to the nearby mountains, and taking photographs. She looked forward to working on and around the family farm, picking up pecans, stamp collecting, and researching and preparing documented genealogy for her family members. She was a member of Asbury Methodist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, and other educational organizations. Marge and Jim spent nearly 20 years caring for her mom, Elizabeth.

Marjorie never met a stranger and was a friend to everyone she met, young and old. She will forever be fondly remembered by family and friends for her smile full of sunshine, her warmth, her compassion, and dedication to her husband, her family and to her students.

The extended family would like to relay their grateful appreciation of Jim tending to Marjorie throughout her final years of living with Alzheimer's disease. His dedication to her was unfailing, just as they had been to one another, during their 63 years of marriage.

Visitation will be held between 1 pm and 2 pm on Friday September 4, 2020 at the Summerville Funeral Home in Salisbury, MO. Funeral services will start at 2 pm with burial following at Asbury Cemetery.
