CAMDEN- The funeral service for Carleton F. Bates, 81, of 146 N. Main St., Camden, who died Sunday (April 8, 1984) in Cincinnati, Ohio, following a period of failing health, will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the St. John-White Funeral Home in Camden. Burial will follow in Columbia, Ohio. Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Bates was a retired educator in the Hillsdale County and Grand Blanc school systems. He had spent more than 30 years in the field of education in Michigan.
He was a history teacher and athletic director at Camden High School, as well as a principal and superintendent at several schools in the southern Michigan area.
Older county citizens may remember him as the owner and driver of Doc Hart, a well-known pacer.
Mr. Bates was a 1929 graduate if Hillsdale College, where he had been a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. In recent years, he served on the alumni executive board at the college.
He is survived by his wife, the former Marian Collette; two daughters, Dianne J. May of Madison, Ind. and Jeanne A. Carr of Lansing; one son, Edward R. Bates of Cincinnati, Ohio; two brothers, Harland and Roscoe; and six grandchildren.
The family suggests donations to Hillsdale College or to the American Cancer Society.
