John H. Kern Passes At His Home Last Night

Mr. John H. Kern passed away at his home last night at 424 N. High street, at 10:45 Tuesday evening, after a lingering illness, although only one week ago he became seriously ill.
Mr. Kern, aged 82, was born on June 4, 1863, in Galena, Illinois. He was the son of Christ and Sophia Kern. He was united in marriage July 16, 1889 to Harriet Bodell, at the First Presbyterian Church in Galena.
Mr. Kern had followed the plumbing trade for many years, working first with the C. A. Asmus & Son firm, and later with the John F. Myers Plumbing Company.
The early part of his life was spent on the Mississippi River on the steamboats plying between St. Louis and Minneapolis. He spent many an hour relating to his many friends his experiences and his stories of the early life in the northwest portion if this territory.
He is survived by his wife; one son, Albert W., of Galena; and three daughters, Mrs. Les Ehret, of Galena, Mrs. R. J. Mann and Harriet of Chicago. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by one son, John, and two grandsons, Edward and Robert Kern, of whom he was very devoted. He is also survived by two half brothers, William, of LeMars, Iowa, and Nicholas, of Portland, Oregon. His entire life was spent in Galena and vicinity. He was admired and respected by his many friends, especially the young people with whom he came in contact.
Mr. Kern is resting at Bertsch Funeral Home where friends may call after 10 o' clock on Saturday morning. Funeral services will be held from the Bertsch Funeral Home Sunday afternoon at 2 o' clock with Reverand John Hodgson officiating. Interment will be made in Greenwood Cemetery.
