Jayne Elizabeth Coffey-Whitley
Oct 9, 1922 -
Aug 20, 2020
Jayne Coffey-Whitley went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2020, surrounded by her family. She was 97 years old. Jayne was born on Oct. 9, 1922, to Walter and Erma Melby of Marion, Ohio. Jayne had three siblings: Robert, James and Harriette Melby all of Marion. She graduated from Harding High School in 1940. Jayne was a beautiful dancer and studied under Miss America 1938 Marilyn Meseke and in 1939 won the Major Bowes (Ted Mack) Amateur Hour. She had her own dance studio at a young age and taught many students over the years. She choreographed plays, dance recitals and ice shows. Jayne was also an avid bowler and instructor and in 2001 was inducted into the USBC Hall of Fame.
In 1942, Jayne married James Frances Coffey in Marion. They had four children: Robert, Richard, Randall and D'Ava. The family moved to Washington state, where they lived until her husband Jim accepted a job assignment with the construction firm of Guy F. Atkinson and required the family to move to West Pakistan in December 1962.
While living in Pakistan, Jayne continued her love of teaching dance and bowling, as well as assisting in community theater by choreographing many dance productions. Her time living in Pakistan allowed her to cultivate friendships which continue to this day. Condolences continue to come in locally as well as across the country, which serves as a testimony to the number of people's hearts that were touched by her and the many things she accomplished. Jayne truly left this world a better place. She was always there for her children and grandchildren at every turn. And for those who knew and loved her, memories that will never fade.
Jayne was preceded in death by her first husband of 42 years, James Frances Coffey; and Dwain M. Whitley, her second husband whom she married May 22, 2001. Her years with Dwain were filled with travel, bowling on various leagues and card playing with close friends.
Jayne is survived by her children, Robert Coffey, Richard (Ruth) Coffey, Randall (Nancy) Coffey and D'Ava (James) Marsh; grandchildren, Ryan (Mary Beth) Coffey, Eric and Ethan Coffey, Kristina Marsh, Kylie (Robbie) Peterson, Brytnee Debrunner and Joshua Coffey; great-grandchildren, Natalie and Ben Coffey and Alice Debrunner; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2020, at 1 p.m., at Angelus Memorial Park Cemetery, following a visitation at 12 p.m. at Legacy Funeral Home, 440 E Klatt Road, Anchorage, AK 99515. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, attendance is limited.
