Leona Mae Fleetwood
April 1, 1937 - August 21, 2020

Leona Mae Fleetwood, 83 has left a void in our lives on Friday, August 21, 2020, but is now at rest with the Lord. She was born April 1, 1937 to John and Clara Peters, both deceased, of Vallonia, IN. She had two brothers and three sisters, all of whom predeceased her.

She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Jewel, who still resides in their family home in Columbus.

They have six children: Gregory Fleetwood (Columbus); Angela Fleetwood Indianapolis); Ramona Fleetwood (Columbus); Melanie (Thomas) Stevens (Indianapolis); Matthew (Tina) Fleetwood (Seymour); and Stephanie (Christopher) Burton (Edinburgh). Six grandchildren blessed her life and brought her joy. They are: Cody (Emily) Fleetwood; Bradley (Renee) Stevens; Amber Fleetwood; Blair Stevens; Brianna Fleetwood; and Tanner (Graylyn) Fleetwood. One great-grandchild, Zoe, was precious to her.

Leona was very much a family person who loved holidays and everyone being together to celebrate those occasions. She was first a beloved wife and mother until her children were older and then became a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1972. She worked at various facilities across the state in that capacity for a number of years before retiring.

She loved to work in flower beds and enjoyed being outdoors mowing the yard with her faithful companion Poco nearby. Leona became an Elvis Presley fan and enjoyed listening to his music and watching his movies. She and Jewel also were fans of musicals which they either watched or saw live. She learned how to crochet and, along with her daughter, donated preemie afghans and hats to NIC units as well as crocheting afghans and other items for her children and grandchildren.

She and Jewel spent countless hours playing cards with both relatives and friends in a church group. The two of them took many trips together as well as with various family members and church friends. They belonged to Garden City Church of Christ for many years and raised their children in the Christian faith.

Leona delighted in watching God’s creation come to various feeders in their backyard, including hummingbirds, finches, cardinals and other birds, woodpeckers, rabbits, squirrels and deer. She and Jewel also had two Shelties who loved her as dearly as she loved them: Poco and Sabre. Leona had a favorite Palomino horse named Queenie during their early years in Columbus on the farm.

She was quiet in spirit and generous of heart, and will be deeply missed on earth, but we rejoice in the hope we have of reuniting with her in heaven.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and the funeral will follow at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at Burkholder Chapel of Thorne-George Family Funeral Homes, 419 N. Chestnut Street, Seymour. Interment will follow at Acme Cemetery. Due to Covid-19, face masks will be required and social distancing will be practiced.

If you would like to honor her memory with a contribution you may do so to either Garden City Church of Christ (Columbus) or Burkholder Funeral Chapel. Please share memories or condolences at www.burkholderfuneralchapel.com.
