Charles Andrew Nelson, Sr., 69, of Girard, passed away at 8:15 P.M., Thursday, July 12, 2007, in the Galichia Heart Hospital in Wichita.
He was in failing health for two years.
He was born November 21, 1937 on the family farm on the Walnut-Englevale road west of Farlington to August Nels and Zelia (sic) [Zalia] Ann (Graham) Nelson.
On September 13, 1957 in Girard, he married his high school sweetheart, Margaret McDermed. She survives of the home.
They had four children, Helen Foulk and Jim of Oskaloosa, Missouri, Rose Seaman and Carl of Girard, Carol Davidson and Charley of Girard, and Charles Nelson, Jr. and friend, Brenda Chamber of Girard.
They were blessed with 13 grandchildren, Scott Brown and Melissa, Joe Foulk and Destiny, Holly Sawyer, Jay Foulk, Nat Sharp and Holly, Ryan Sharp, Andy Sharp and Ashley, Carl Seaman, II, Stephanie Benner and Charles, Chris Davidson and Stephanie, Annie Davidson, Samantha Davidson, and Trenton Ginn. Seventeen great-grandchildren.
Charlie attended Salem Grade School and Girard High School.
Following graduation, he worked for Fort Scott Pottery, the Fish Hatchery at Farlington, several construction companies including Plains, Freeto, Ameno Brothers, Beachner's, and John Westhoff.
He also worked for Midwest Minerals, the Girard Police Department, Midwestern Distribution, and the Crawford County Highway Department.
Charlie was a member of the Girard Masonic Lodge No. 93, AF & AM, the Fort Scott Consistory, the Mirza Shrine of Pittsburg, Electa Chapter No. 23, Order of the Eastern Star of Girard, AARP, and the Kansas Peace Officers Association.
He enjoyed fishing and camping and spending time with Margaret visiting flea markets and casinos.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Marjorie Nelson Sylvia.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 P.M., Tuesday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Pastor Rick Prideaux officiating.
Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery.
Eastern Star services will be at 7:00 P.M., Monday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home where the family will receive friends until 8:00 P.M..
Friends may call after 10:00 A.M. Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Shriner's Hospitals and these may be left at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, 66743.
