Herman was the son of Otto Herman and Freida Poppe Thumann. His parents are buried in New Bielau Cemetery in Colorado Co, TX. He shares a stone with his wife, Mary Leona Burris Walker Thumann, who he married 19 June 1970 in Anderson Co, TX.

OBITUARY: Palestine (TX) Herald-Press, Wednesday, 12 March 1997:

Services for Herman Thumann Sr., 77, of Elkhart, will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Watson Evangelistic Church in Elkhart with Lon McVeigh and Betty Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery under the direction F Bailey & Foster Funeral Home in Palestine.

Mr. Thumann died Monday after in St. Francis Health Center in Madisonville.

He was born in Columbus, Texas, on Dec. 28, 1919, to Hugo and Freda Poppe Thumann.

Mr. Thumann owned and operated Thumann's Bar-B-Que in Madisonville. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U. S. Army. He was a member of the Living Truth Church in Madisonville.

He is survived by his wife, Leona Burris Thumann of Elkhart; daughters, Kathy Walker of Elkhart, Pattie Datray of Madisonville and Sue Skaro of Laramie, Wyo.; sons, Herman Thumann Jr. of Columbus, Gary Walker of Elkhart, Jimmy Walker of Palestine and Eddie Walker of Temple; sisters, Eleanor Rutledge of Eagle Lake and Lillie German of Weimar; brothers, Adolph Thumann and Ernest Thumann, both of Weimar; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Eddie Walker, Jimmy Walker, Brian Seeley, Doyle Campbell, Hardy Datray and Dennis Burris.

Condolence calls will be received from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
