Jerry H. Aiken, M.D., 82, died on April 26, 2020, at his Yucaipa home, surrounded by family, after a brief battle with cancer.

He was born in Glendale, on Aug. 31, 1937, to Elton and Bernice Aiken.

Jerry was active in the Boy Scouts while growing up and earned his Eagle Scout while attending Hollywood High School, where he graduated in 1955. He then went on to UCLA and then USC, earning a medical degree. He did his medical internship at Fresno County Hospital.

From 1964-66, Jerry was a Full Lieutenant in the Navy. He was assigned to the Marine Corps and deployed to Vietnam, where he helped to set up the First Base Hospital in Da Nang.
After returning from Vietnam, he did his medical residency at both LA County Hospital and USC Medical Center, specializing in ophthalmology. He was a partner at Kaiser Hospital for 27 years and was one of the first ophthalmologists to use lasers in eye surgery. He retired in 1996.

Jerry enjoyed his retirement, with daily breakfasts at the Kopper Kettle Kafe, where he would meet up with his friends, he called “the Cronies.” He was also a popular visitor at Mike and Jim’s Barbershop. His friends called him “Doc.”

Jerry enjoyed going to the shooting range, fishing, dinners with his daughters, daily walks, and spoiling his bulldog, Gunner, but his real passion was spending time with his grandchildren, Cameron, Zack, and Makenna. He attended every school function, game, performance, and event with them.

He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Elton and Bernice, and by his closest cousin, Kareen Madden.

He is survived by his daughters, Shannon Aiken Costelow and Kimberly LeVesque and sons in law, Gerrit Costelow and Matt LeVesque; three grandchildren: Cameron Costelow, Zack LeVesque, and Makenna Costelow. He is also survived by his two step-grandsons Adam and Josh LeVesque and their wives Melissa and Bri and great-grandchildren, Julia and Dean LeVesque: By extended family and many good friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either The Fisher House Foundation or the Boy Scouts of America.

He will be buried, in a private ceremony. A later celebration of life will be held.
