Lawrence "Orange" Phelps was born on August 17, 1899 in Wilson County, Tennessee, the son of Samuel Green Phelps (1860–1939) and Mary Ella (Melvin) Phelps (1855–1913).

He attended schools in Wilson County but lived most of his life in Nashville, Davidson County.

Orange was married 1st to Annie Laura Martin (1895–1946) and he was married 2nd to Martha Mack.

His Death Certificate lists him working at H Brown Furniture Company, while he's a "special City police duty officer" on his published obituary. Living at 1031-B Petway Avenue in Nashville, Orange was 61 years old and married when he died of a coronary embolus at Nashville General Hospital on August 27, 1960.

Survivors included his widow, daughters Mrs Mary Russell of Denver, Colorado, Mrs Catherine Gladney of Chicago, Illinois, Mrs Cordelia Johnson of Kansas City and Mrs Margie Cathey of Los Angeles, California, son Gordon Phelps of Alton, Georgia, stepdaughters Mrs T N Smith and Mrs J J Freeman of Nashville and Mrs W H Robinson of Manchester, brother Orville Phelps of Nashville, stepsons Everett Mack and Harold Mack of Nashville and a number of grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held at Phillips Robinson Funeral Home on August 30th, and burial was in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Nashville.
