Dorothy “Dotty” Overly, age 83, radiated the love and grace of Jesus with her ever-present smile and servant’s heart. She went to be with her Lord on September 28th, 2019. Her warmth and compassion were evident to all who met her. She began her life in Clinton County, Ohio on December 16, 1935 as the daughter of Hazel Sarver Bernard and Russell Bernard.

Dotty had a life-long love of music. She majored in music with concentrations in piano and voice at the Ohio State University and was a life-long fan of the Buckeyes. Dotty met “the love of her life”, Donald E. Overly at Ohio State. Don claims that he knew from the very first time he met her that he would marry her as she had completely captured his heart. Don and Dotty were married September 11, 1955 and enjoyed 64 years together. They had two sons: Jeffrey M. Overly (Davidson, NC) and Michael C. Overly (Fishers, IN). When her sons married Karen Stevenson Overly and Lynn Franklin Overly, Dotty welcomed them and whole heartedly accepted them as her daughters. Both Don and Dotty set great examples of how to love one another within the covenant of marriage.

One of her first jobs after graduating from OSU was teaching Hispanic children music (and oftentimes English as well) in San Benito, Texas while Don was serving in the Air Force. After the birth of her children she taught choral music in Urbana, Ohio prior to earning her master’s degree in counseling at Wittenberg. She spent many years as a guidance counselor at Stebbins High School and retired in 1991. Dotty joyfully sang in the choir at Normandy United Methodist Church in Centerville, Ohio for many years. Her ability to recall lyrics of her favorite hymns was impressive.

Dotty delighted in her four grandchildren: Kathleen B. Overly (Austin, Texas); Michael S. Overly (Frisco, Texas); Noelle Overly Bauer (Chicago,IL) and Kristin Overly Lord (Fishers, IN) and later her great-grandchildren: Maya and Judah Stephenson; Michael and Lily Overly; Bode and Navy Bauer; and Blakely and Bennett Lord. The grandchildren (and their friends) all enjoyed receiving Dotty's “grandma cookies” which she sent in bulk to them each month throughout their college years. To this day, even after many attempts, no one can duplicate this recipe.

Dorothy loved her brother, Roger Bernard (Delaware, OH), as well as her many nieces and nephews all of whom live in Ohio.

Dotty faithfully served others as a member of the Priscilla Circle within Normandy. She enjoyed baking pies and sewing crafts for the church bazaar.

Dotty loved to hand sew quilts and gifted many beautiful quilts to her children; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren which will serve as wonderful reminders of the warmth of her love.

A service in honor of Dorothy’s life will be held at Normandy United Methodist Church in Centerville, Ohio on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Dotty can be made to Normandy United Methodist Church Memorial Fund at 450 W Alex Bell Rd, Dayton, Ohio 45459 or Hospice of Dayton at www.hospiceofdayton.org / Hospice of Dayton 324 Wilmington Ave., Dayton, OH 45420.
