Tommy was the younger son of Czech children's author and songwriter Ilse Weber, and her husband Willi. When the Nazis occupied Czechoslovakia, Ilse and Willi were able to send their elder son to safety on a Kindertransport, but were soon interned in Theresienstadt with their younger son Tommy. The family was deported to Auschwitz in October 1944; Tommy and his mother were sent off to the gas chambers on arrival.
