Peter was the fourth child of Gustavus Rape and the only one born in NC. He grew up in SC before moving with the family to TN where he married Sarah Ann Funderburk in 1812. Together they had the following children: John, Jackson, Margaret Catherine, James, Henry, Mary "Polly:, Sarah Ann, Peter Cartwright, and Jacob Early.
His name appears on a Roll of Mounted Volunteer Gunmen, Capt. Robert Evans' Company, War of 1812.
After the war, Peter moved to Illinois with his family. In 1841 Peter lost his wife, his first child and three other relatives in quick succession. All five family members were buried in the now lost cemetery on Peter's farm.
In 1842 Peter married Elizabeth Snodgrass. Peter died in 1847 and was buried in the same/lost cemetery as his family members.
