After a lingering illness Mrs. Katherine Dehler, wife of the late Valentine Dehler, died at her home on Poplar Street this morning at 1:55 o'clock. Mrs. Dehler's maiden name was Katherine Braun and she was born in Frittlingen, Germany, April 27, 1842.
She was in her 18th year when she immigrated to this country and she made her home in Cincinnati for a short time before coming to Madison. It was in this city that she met Mr. Valentine Dehler, to whom she was married October 9, 1865. During their early married life Mr. Dehler conducted a shoe shop and his wife was largely responsible for the success that he later achieved in business in Madison. Many were the nights that she assisted her husband in the shoe shop, until the early hours of the morning.
Ten children were born to Mr. And Mrs. Dehler, 7 sons and 3 daughters, of whom 5 are still living. The surviving children are Andrew J. and Frank X. Dehler, both of Madison; William E., of Terre Haute, John V., of Seymour; and Mary Elizabeth, of this city. Mrs. Dehler was the last of a large family of children.
Mrs. Dehler was greatly devoted to her family, her church, and friends. Since her girlhood she had been a regular attendant at the services of St. Mary's church, where she will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends. She was an ideal mother and friend, greatly beloved by all who knew her and her passing leaves a vacancy that can never be refilled.
Funeral services for Mrs. Dehler will be held at 9 o'clock Thursday morning at St. Mary's church and interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
