Reuben's first definitive record is that of his marriage to Laentye Miller on 30 October 1802 in Bergen County, New Jersey. The name, Laentye is thought to be Dutch for Eleanor. In various records she is listed as Mary, Ellen, Eleanor and Mary Eleanor Miller. Their children's census records shed some light on where they lived and where Reuben and Mary Eleanor were born. Their first three children were born in New Jersey (thought to be Paramus, Bergen, New Jersey) William B. 1803, Joseph 1805, and Mary Frances 1808. (There may be an unknown female born about 1810 but the second female child listed in the 1820 census under the age of 10 might not be that child. She could be Eleanor Jane Sutton who was born in July 1820 if the census was actually taken after her birth.) The next two children were born in Cleves, Hamilton, Ohio: Anna born in 1812 and Archibald in 1815. The last three children were born in Indiana: David was born in Dearborn County in 1818, Eleanor born in 1820 and Reuben, Jr. in 1822 were both born in Ripley County Indiana.
Reuben Sutton, Sr. was recorded in the United States Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Tract Books being assessed for 60 acres in Dearborn County, Indiana on 6 November 1818. He and his family were living in Ripley County, Indiana in the 1820 census.
