David Sawyers, son of James Sawyers and Hannah Hays, married on October 7, 1794, Elizabeth "Betsy" Paxton, daughter of William Paxton and Eleanor Hays, sister of Hannah. David and Elizabeth kept an inn near Natural Bridge, Virginia. David, a patriot, was targeted by the English who liberated his slaves and confiscated his property, including 12 horses. David, filled with independence, courage and great physical power, removed his family to Tennessee, where he was elected sheriff. He drowned, April 17, 1820, in pursuit of a gang of criminals that had infested the area where he lived.
