Bernice M. Coron

Bernice Marie Coron was a former resident of Hurley. She was born in Ironwood, Mich., on Oct. 12, 1924. She was born to eternal life on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007. She was happy to rejoin her family in God's heavenly arms.

She was the daughter of Louis and Mary Regina (Hamlin) Coron-Mehle. Her early years were spent in Ironwood, where the family were members of St. Ambrose Catholic Church. In her early years, she attended school at St. Ambrose until the family moved to Hurley. In Hurley, the family were members of St. Mary's Church, where Bernice also attended school. The family home was at 513 Iron St., one block from St. Mary's Church and School.

After graduating from St. Mary's School with high honors, she attended Hurley High School, where her friends called her "Bernie." Her high school friends said of her, "She had her share of wisdom."

After graduating from high school in 1942 where she had been a member of the glee club and choir among other activities, she became the family's main source of support since her father had not been able to work because of a serious heart condition.

That first summer after graduating she and her best friend, Eleanore Bergland took a summer job at Ed Gabes Lost Lake Resort in Sayner, where they made an amazing $7 a week plus room and board. She would reminisce often about that summer! After that she took a job at the local five & dime store in Hurley as a clerk, while attending night school at the local junior college where she concentrated on a career as a secretary. By 1943, she landed a job at the Austin Company, a mining related industry. The company was located in Cary, not far from her home.

In 1944 shortly after her father died, she decided to join her best friend, Eleanore, who had moved to Milwaukee to work. Within a short period of time, she landed a job at Allis Chalmers in West Allis as a secretary. The company was noted around the worked for its farm machinery and heavy industry. She rose through the ranks and became private secretary to the individual in the company who was involved in labor-management negotiations. Notably during all this time, she helped her younger brother get through grade school, high school, college and medical school. After 38 years at Allis Chalmers, she finally retired.

In 1991, she moved to Watertown to be closer to her family which consisted of her brother and sister-in-law, 13 nieces and nephews, and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. She was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church.

Her hobbies included reading, writing, traveling, going to plays, watching old movies and shopping! Periodically she would say, "Would you please get me a JC Penney's catalog?" But her real passion was family history.

She had her share of medical problems, but rarely complained.

Bernice is survived by a brother, Alfred (Pearl) Coron of Lac du Flambeau; numerous cousins including Esther Fafford of Minocqua and David Coron of Winona, Minn.; 13 nieces and nephews, Dave (Joyce) Coron of Iron Mountain, Mich., Kathleen (Robert) Tracy of Clyman, Michael (Connie) Coron of Wautoma, Diane (Mike) Muche of Lebanon, Linda (Kurt) Mueller of Watertown, Caroline (Brad) Bailey of Clyman, Chris (John) Braunschweig of Lebanon, Jean (David) Otto of Lebanon, Steve Coron of Watertown, Anne (Charles) Noll of Neosho, Mark (Denise) Coron of Woodruff, Tom (Sandra) Coron of Woodruff and Mary (Ryan) Romero of Hustisford; 37 great-nieces and -nephews; and five great-great-nieces and -nephews.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Mary Regina (Hamlin) Coron-Mehle; her stepfather, Otto Frederick Mehle of Milwaukee, formerly of Liepzieg, Germany; five half brothers and sisters, Byron, Lawrence, Ruth, Leona and Loretta; four uncles, Godfrey, Fred, Ernest and Joe; three aunts, Donalda, Delia and Vina; a cousin, Daniel; a nephew, Alfred Coron Jr.; a great-great-niece, Emily Tracy; and other relatives.

For most of the family, Bernice was known as Aunt B. Although she had no children of her own, there was an over abundance of love for her from her nieces and nephews whom she enjoyed to be with and loved very much. She was a larger part of their lives and was always there to help them whenever she could. Bernice was a devout Roman Catholic. She led a life God would approve of without having to say a word. Aunt B had many wonderful qualities, but without a doubt the greatest of these was how she treated people. That is how her family will remember her and that will be her legacy her on earth. She will be truly missed!!!

A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley. A Mass of Christian burial will follow. Bernice's final resting place will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. A luncheon will immediately follow in St. Mary's Church.
