Marianna Catherine Van Rooy Mattecheck
June 21, 1932 – July 26, 2020
Marianna Catherine Mattecheck was born on June 21, 1932 in Tacoma, Washington to Clemens William and Marie Catherine Van Rooy. Marianna grew up on Tacoma, Washington with her parents and 3 older siblings, Buster, Betty Lou, and Bill. She attended Aquinas High School and went on to study music at Marylhurst College in Portland. There, she met the love of her life Robert “Bob” Mattecheck and they married on June 9, 1951. Bob was commissioned as an officer of the United States Marine Corps. The newlyweds traveled to where Bob was stationed; Quantico, VA, Jacksonville, NC, and San Diego, CA and settled in North Bend, OR in 1952 where they raised five children. She and Bob built the North Bend Lanes (now in its 63rd year in business) in 1957. The two loved the life they shared together that was focused on their family, their business, golf, playing bridge, and traveling.
A highly creative person, Marianna studied harp and music from age 12 and went on to study dance as she was involved in a troupe that toured and performed throughout the Northwest. Her artistry then shifted to the culinary world as she masterfully prepared gourmet meals. She could often be found gathering ideas from her travels, working out how to replicate restaurant meals, and pouring over cookbooks. Her family, friends and church congregates were the grateful recipients of her gastronomic savvy. In addition, she made all of the delicious, popular soups served at the Back Alley of North Bend Lanes. In addition to raising a family, running a business, and volunteering at church, Marianna was also active with the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) and helped raise scholarship money for young women. She made long and lasting friendships through her involvement with this group.
Marianna deeply loved her husband Bob of 65 years, her five children; Bill Mattecheck (Hiliary), Katy Thielen (Dave), Jim Mattecheck (Kristina), Mark Mattecheck (Angie) and Pam Knell (Leland); her 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandsons. She will be remembered for her kindness, cooking, stories and, for those near and dear, her lullabies. “I see the moon, the moon sees me, the moon sees the one I long to see. So God bless the moon, and God bless me, and God bless the one, I long to see…”
A private family mass will be held on Friday, August 14, 2020.
