He was a Master Mariner and was Captain of the Leyland Line Steamer S.S. Devonian, of Liverpool. He was part of the rescue of the S.S. Volturno, which had caught fire in the North Atlantic and had been abandoned on 9th October 1913. His ship rescued 59 survivors. He was awarded by the King, along with 231 officers and other men the silver medal for gallantry. The Board of Trade also presented pieces of plate to each of the captains of the vessels of the rescuing fleet. He was awarded the O.B.E. He died at his residence, Laburnum Cottage, Upton Park, Chester.
