There seems to be a great dispute as to which George Jarrell she actually married as there were 2 George A Jarrells in the Clarke and Madison County area of Georgia - said to be George Arnold Jarrell Jr and the other George Anderson Jarrell. Of both those names, I have not located any documents specifying actual middle names. I've seen documents with only the middle initial of "A", but none specific to either middle name. Some documents without a middle initial at all.

One was George A Jarrell - a son of Martha "Patsy" Locklin Griffeth Jarrell who married 2nd to James S Jarrell. Martha and James had 4 known children - Nancy (born about 1805), Louisiana "Lucy" (born 1807), Stinson S (born 1808) and George A (born 1811) Jarrell. All of these children are heirs mentioned in the will of James S Jarrell. The other George A Jarrell was a son of George Arnold Jarrell and Anne K Collins.

There was a George Jarrell who enlisted in the Confederate Army on 20 August 1861 as a Private in the 3rd Regiment GA Infantry, Company L also known as the Clarke County Rifles. He was discharged in August 1862 for being "Over-Age". An article appeared in the Southern Banner (Athens, GA) regarding George Jarrell - non-specific to either George.

The Yankee Raid in Clark.

Just as we were putting our paper to press last week, undoubted intelligence was received that Yankees had passed through Watkinsville and were advancing upon Athens, in a column 800 to 1000 strong. Everything was dropped, and our entire male population, with a very few exceptions, sprung to arms. Very soon the report of artillery was heard from the direction of the battery commanded by Captain E. P. Lumpkins, near the Paper Mill. A courier soon came in reporting that the enemy had come within range of the guns, and that our brave boys stationed there had opened upon them. Four shells, well directed, caused a retrograde movement on the part of the enemy. It was thought that they would attempt to enter the town by another rout; and the forces were so disposed as to meet them at any point by which they might approach. They remained in position two days and nights, but no enemy approached. They were satisfied with the first feeler. It is reported that the first shell from Lumpkin's battery killed one Lieutenant and wounded four men.

In passing through the county the raiders committed many depredations upon private property; such as taking ladies' watches, silver spoons, forks, and other valuables. They captured Mr. George Jarrell, of this, and threatened to hang him. It is thought they have carried the threat into execution, as he has not yet been heard from. They also captured Mr. D. M. McCleskey, but released him.

A general sweep of horses, mules and provisions was made wherever they passed."

There is a memorial on FindAGrave (#91120964 ) that shows as being for George Arnold Jarrell Jr, but no documents have been proven as to this being George Arnold Jarrell Jr. The Civil War Burial Records show his name simply as George Jarrell, as does the headstone and that he was a citizen (non-enlisted). It has been assumed by others the reason he was captured and taken prisoner of the Union Army is that he was a spy.

George A Jarrell, to whichever one she was married, died intestate and when the appraisal was done on the estate, James L Griffeth was one of the appraisers. James L. Griffeth was a half-brother to George A Jarrell. Eliza was the executrix of the estate and she died just 3 short years later. Eliza was buried here at Bethabara Baptist Church Cemetery where a great number of the Griffeth family is interred - all related to the Griffeth family to which Martha "Patsy" Locklin Griffeth was married prior to her marriage to James Jarrell. Additionally, Louisiana "Lucy Ann" Jarrell Hayes was interred here, who - if Eliza married the son of Martha and James S Jarrell, would have been her sister-in-law. None of the Jarrell's of the George Arnold Jarrell Sr family are interred here. This leads me to believe that the George A Jarrell that Eliza was married to was the brother of the aforementioned Lucy Ann Jarrell Hayes. Additionally, Eliza and George's daughter, Martha A Jarrell Jackson, is interred here. Part or all of Eliza's Yerbey family are buried in an old private family cemetery in Clarke Co., Ga.

Further, I believe that Eliza and George's daughter, Martha Ann, was named after both their mothers, Martha Locklin Griffeth Jarrell and Anne K Collins Yerbey, as well as her middle name being that of Eliza.

Another issue that makes defining the difference between the 2 George A Jarrells is this ... Eliza's parents are said to have been Burrell Yearby/Yerbey and Anne K Collins. Interestinly, Anne K Collins (in several family trees) is shown to be the mother of one of the George A Jarrell(s), while several family trees show Elizabeth Callaway to be the mother of George Arnold Jarrell, Jr. So, which George A Jarrell actually married Eliza? If it is George Arnold Jarrell, Jr - were Eliza and George Arnold Jarrell Jr actually 1/2 siblings - if Anne K Collins was married to both Burrell Yearby/Yerbey and George Arnold Jarrell Sr. Interesting to say the least!
Considering the above, I believe the information shown on the memorial for George Arnold Jarrell Jr (memorial #: 91120964) is incorrect. I do believe he is actually Eliza's husband, but has the wrong information in the bio section.
