Death of an Old Resident

Mrs. Mary Baker died at the residence of her son, Wm. R. Baker, on Smith street, in this city, on Saturday evening at half past ten, aged 88 years.

Mrs. Baker, whose maiden name was Davis, was born in Glamorganshire, South Wales, in February, 1798, and was married there to Samuel Baker in 1825. In April 1832, she left Wales with her husband and two children, and after a stormy passage, they reached Carbondale in July, of that year, and took up their residence here, where Mr. Baker worked at his trade as carpenter until 1854, with the exception of two years during which they lived on a farm in Warren, Bradford county. In 1854, she moved with her husband and two younger children to Pittston, and resided there until the death of Mr. Baker, which occurred in August, 1864. Returning then to this city she has lived here surrounded by her remaining children and grand-children, whose watchful care was devoted to making her declining years peaceful and happy.

When but fourteen years of age she united with the Congregational church, of which she was a devoted member at the time of her death. Faithful to every christian duty to the church in all its services, her greatest labors were specially devoted to making a christian home, and her noble christian virtues permeated her whole domestic life. For nearly seventy-five years she was a devoted member of the visible church of Christ on earth, a quiet, earnest christian, whose whole life was a noble exemplification of the power and glory of christian love. Few persons are called to carry the banner of christianity on earth for nearly three quarters of a century, and fewer still can say as did she a few days before her last sickness, that in seventy-five years, amidst prosperity and adversity, joy and sorrow, trials and comforts, darkness and light, she had never lost her hope in religion nor faith in Christ.

Her bible was a close companion, and its promises her constant joy. In them she lived and with a perfect trust passed peacefully and without a struggle to the rest prepared for the people of God.

She was the mother of eight children, of whom but two survive her - Wm. R., and Samuel D., both residents of our city.

The funeral services were held at the residence of her son, Wm. R. Baker, on Smith street, on Tuesday afternoon at two 'clock [sic] and was largely attended. Rev. D. L. Davis, of the Congregational church, of this city, of which she was a member, preaching from the text which she selected many years ago: - "Uphold me according to thy word, that I may live; and let me not be ashamed of my hope." - Ps. 119:116. The remains were interred in Maplewood cemetery.

Of the old residents of our city, we believe there is but one remaining who came to Carbondale before Mr.s Baker. We refer to James Coyle, whose residence here dates from February, 1832, while Mrs. Baker and husband came in July of the same year.
