Excerpt -- The double funeral of Mrs. John McCallister and her son, Hugh Curtis McCallister, who both passed away on Nov. 18, was held at the Jones Funeral Home Saturday afternoon, Nov. 21. A host of friends and relatives were present at the obsequies. The officiating minister was Rev. Edna Whitson pastor of the Pilot Grove and Ohio Methodist Churches. The interment of the mother and son was in the Pilot Grove Cemetery.
Ocie Vay Martin was born at Kinross, Iowa, on Dec. 6, 1888, the daughter of Charles and Minnie Martin. She was united in marriage to John McCallister of Williamsburg on Nov. 14, 1907. To this union 10 children were born, six sons and four daughters. The living children are George, Donald, and Daryle, of Williamsburg, William of Ainsworth and Wayne of North English; the living daughters are Mrs. Russell Conn of Marengo, Mrs. Ruby Schwarting of Walker, Mrs. Vincent Wagner of Parnell and Mrs. Reita Butler of Deep River. Mrs. MCallister is survived by her husband. She died in Mt. Pleasant a few hours after the death of her son. The surviving sisters are Mrs. Harley Westfall of Kinross, Mrs. Fay Randolph of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Platte Hicks of Keota, and Mrs. Florence McGee of Calif. Her living brothers are Guy of Wellman, Eurdice of Kinross and William of Calif. Two brothers, Floyd and Carl preceded her in death. Her grandchildren number 22.
Hugh Curtis McCallister died at University Hospital at Iowa City, Wednesday, Nov. 18. He was born in Troy Township on June 14, 1910, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John McCallister. He received his education in the public schools of this county. He spent his entire life in the parental home. he had been engaged in farming until last year when he was unable to do so. His untimely death is mourned by his father, his five brothers, and his four sisters.
