He was one of the first Justices appointed in Albemarle County before it was divided from Goochland in 1744, and he served as a colonel in the county militia during the American Revolution.
He married Lucy Henry, (sister of Patrick Henry) on January 3, 1764 in Virginia. He and Lucy were the parents of nine known children:

Valentine signed his will March 10, 1781 and it was recorded in September, 1781. In 1782, his 2,226 acres were entered in the land tax list as his posthumous estate.
There is also on record the will of William Cox, dated February 10, 1711, probated June, 1712, which mentions son Stephen, daughters Martha, Mary, Prudence, Judith, Elizabeth, and wife Sarah.
There is recorded in Goochland county the will of Sarah Cox, dated March 26, 1726, probated January 20, 1747. She mentions son Stephen, daughters Edith, Martha, Elizabeth, Mary, Prudence, and Judith. She appoints Henry Wood her executor, and the will is in the handwriting of Henry Wood (the clerk of Goochland county at that date, and father of Col. Valentine Wood), who married Lucy Henry, and was the grandfather of General Joseph E. Johnston, Beverly Johnston, of Abingdon, Valentine Wood Southall, and Dr. Phillip Southall, of Amelia, and whose daughters married Edward Carter, of Blenheim, Albermarle County; William Meriwether, grandson of Col. Nich. Meriwether, of Hanover; and William Pryor.
In the genealogy of the Wood family, it is stated that Henry Wood (for forty-odd years an attorney-at-law and county clerk of Goochland) married Martha Cox (Cocke), 13 October 1723, at Bremo, in Henrico county. Martha Cox, says the genealogy, was the daughter of William and Sarah Cox, of Henrico.
