Russell Howell Browning, age 95, of rural Chamberburg, IL passed away at his home on Wednesday, July 29, 2020. He was born on February 14, 1925 to Russell and Elma Howell Browning in the same home he lived and passed away in. He married Martha Jean Ballard on May 20, 1945 in Chambersburg, IL, and she survives.

Howell graduated from Chambersburg High School and then began farming on the family farm where he was born and raised. He also worked for Lindsey Childers doing TV repair and setup. Howell was a member of the Chambersburg Christian Church where he was an Elder in earlier years and volunteered many hours. He loved farming and continued to work until his body didn't allow him to anymore, but was still planting corn in his mind. Howell did carpentry work, adding on rooms in his home and always repaired what needed fixed. He was a collector and tinkerer as well. Howell dearly loved his wife, and enjoyed their evenings spent going out to eat as well as travelling around the country to visit family. He liked to visit with anyone he could, but he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandkids. He also loved to hunt and fish. Howell sometimes lacked a filter, but made up for it with his honest opinions and his family will miss him very much.

He is survived by his loving wife of 75 years, Martha Jean Browning; a son, Robert (Cari) Browning; five daughters, Vivian (Roger) Smith, Winifred (Roger) Goodman, Jane (Steve) Coleman, Judy (Dennis) Douglas and Mary Coultas; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-two great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many in-laws.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Elma Browning; in-laws, Herbert & Velma Ballard; granddaughter, Kaylynn Browning; daughter-in-law, Susan Browning; son-in-law, Roger Coultas; and two sisters, Evelyn Davis and Ruth Rosa.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2020 at 10:30 AM at the historic Calhoun Cemetery on the family farm near Chambersburg. Memorials are suggested to be made to Calhoun Cemetery.
