John Sheldon Watkins, age 76, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2019, at his home in Crawford, CO. He died of metastasized prostate cancer.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 25, 2019 at the Crawford Community United Methodist Church, 297 Dogwood, Crawford, Colorado 81415.

John was born on June 19, 1942, in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Delia and Owen Watkins. After graduating from St. Paul Central High School, he pursued his studies and career in architecture and construction at Dunwoody Institute.

In 1966, John married Kaylene Robertson with whom he had three children. After the birth of their first child in 1970, they moved from the Twin Cities to Alexandria, MN. After completely rebuilding the ranch house, he and Kaylene purchased, John started Watkins Construction, which he built into a large commercial construction company.

John and Kaylene lived in Alexandria, MN for 20 years, raising their three children, Krista, Stacy and Brian. Life was full on their 180 acre ranch, showing horses, laboring in a large vegetable garden, harvesting hay and grain crops, raising cattle, traveling, snowmobiling, skiing and coaching/playing hockey and baseball.

In 1988, when John’s marriage to Kaylene ended, he prepared to move to Fort Collins, CO, fulfilling a long time dream of living in the Rocky Mountains. When he settled in Ft. Collins in 1990, he continued his career with Watkins Construction, made new friendships and attended Brian’s high school football games, while building his own home in the foothills. He enjoyed many adventures with friends, horseback riding and camping in the mountains and the Arizona desert.

In 2007, John married Lynne Armijo and moved to Crawford, CO. Here they enjoyed their home on the beautiful Western Slope, spending time with dear friends, canine companions and horses. John was an active volunteer with community events and worked at the Crawford Reservoir.

John will be missed by his wife Lynne Watkins of Crawford, CO, daughters, Krista (Jeff) Price, Stacy (Jay) Montgomery of Denver, CO; his son Brian (Alison) Watkins of Fort Collins, CO. He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Jaden and Dane Price, Seth and Thaya Montgomery, Owen and Olivia Watkins, stepdaughter, Stacey (Randy) Hall, and step son Kevin (Tara) Martin and step grandchildren Shane and Jenna Hall, and Wesley Martin all of Colorado.

John was preceded in death by his father, Owen Watkins his mother, Delia Watkins and his brother, Jerome Watkins.
