Mary Nancy Troxel was born in Hocking county, state of Ohio, August 13, 1863, and passed away at her home 804 Tenth Street, Osawatomie, on Friday, October 8, 1948, having attained the age of 85 years, 1 month and 24 days. She was brought to Kansas when a little child by her foster parents who settled in Baxter Springs where her girlhood days were spend.
She was married to George Hill Troxel on December 21, 1881, and moved to the Spring Ridge vicinity. To this union, eight children were born, six of whom survive: two daughters, Mrs. Ota Dickey and Mrs. V.M. Holloman; four sons, Fred, Arlie and Bert of Osawatomie, and Manfred of Inglewood, California. Also surviving are twenty-five grandchildren and thirty-eight great grandchildren. Her husband, one son, Lewis, and a daughter, Viola preceded her in death. In 1907 Mr. and Mrs. Troxel brought their family to Osawatomie and made their home here since that time.
Mrs. Troxel has been a member of the Methodist church in Osawatomie for nearly 30 years, having joined the church on profession of faith under the ministry of the Rev. W.M. Rogers, and as long as her health permitted was a faithful attendant and an active worker in the Sunday School. She also belonged to the Rebekah lodge and to the Woman’s Relief Corps.
Rev. William I. Hastie conducted funeral services at the Methodist church Sunday, October l0 at 2:30 o’clock. Rex Grow at the organ accompanied Mrs. Esther Teeter and Mrs. Gertrude Price who sang “Good Night and Good Morning, and “In the Garden.” Bodybearers were Dennis Troxel, Bruce Dickey, Jack Stine, Richard Briggs, Arlie Holloman, Freddie Troxel. Those in charge of the followers were Mrs. Fred St. Louise, Mrs. Katherine McClain, Mrs. Sam Bearly, Mrs. Grace Speck, Mrs. Mae White, Mrs. Maude Kelley, Mrs. Lola McGuire, Mrs. Clyde Hammond, Mrs. James Van Horn, and Mrs. Floyd Conley. Burial was in the Elmdale cemetery.
