An Old Settler Gone.

Died—In this city, Monday afternoon, January 14, 1901, at about 2:30 o'clock p. m., William A. Couch, age 53 years and 17 days.

Funeral services occurred at the residence of A. Louderback, on Windsor Hill, Tuesday, at 2 o'clock p. m. Burial in Galena cemetery.

"Uncle Tom" as he was more familiarly known to almost everyone in Empire City, had been in poor health for about five months, with a complication of diseases, chief among which were heart disease and dropsy. What he suffered no one will ever know. Certainly untold agonies.

Wm. A. Couch probably had his faults, the same as we all have, but this is no time to mention them leaving them to a higher and more just Judge. Rather would we dilate on his many virtues, chief among them being his fondness for children and the many ways he employed to make life happier for the little ones about him. Often loading his road wagon full with the little ones and taking them to the woods for a day's outing. The deceased was an old soldier being a member of Co. A, 44th Infantry. He had resided in this city for more than twenty years.

Notes:
William Albert Couch was the son of William Couch and Louisa Jane Province Couch
, both native of Tennessee, with whom he lived in 1850 in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, and in 1860, in Washington, Grundy County, Missouri. William had 2 known siblings, Marion Azariah Couch, and Lucinda Couch Williams. A brother, noted as "Nathan" in his obituary, may have been Marion.

William A. Couch, whose calculated birth date was December 28, 1847, native of Missouri, married Martha Lorance on July 25, 1866, in Grundy County, Missouri. Both lived in that place at the time. It was just after his service in the Civil War, where he enlisted in the 44th Regiment of the Missouri Infantry Volunteers, Company A, on August 8, 1864, in Houston, Missouri; mustered in 10 days later in St. Joseph MO; appointed a Corporal September 4, 1864; and mustered out August 15 1865 in Benton Barracks (also called Camp Benton, located in St. Louis, Missouri).

In 1870, he lived with 2 children, in Georgia, Jasper County, Missouri: Ellis Couch, a female, born about 1867 in Missouri, and Louisa Couch, age 1.

In 1880, he lived in Empire City, Kansas, as a boarder of Andrew Lauderback. He was listed as married, no wife or children noted, and worked as a miner.

In 1900, at the same place, still working as a miner, strangely enough, he was listed as born "at sea" in December 1850; the location of his birth was off by a couple of years, as was the place of his birth, which was Missouri, rather than at sea.

William was active in the Republican politics of the day and in 1897, was nominated as constable for Empire City.

It is not known at this time what happened to his wife and children, although he was listed as widowed in the 1900 census.
