According to Iowa Death Record 73-1385 James Russell Aliff died on 6 May 1925. His father is shown as Tomas Aliff and his mother is Lucinda Burns. The informant is Harve Aliff. Death occurred in Clarinda, Page County, Iowa. He was divorced at the time of his death. This death certificate can be seen on Ancestry by using the mis-transcribed surname of Cliff.

According to the Civil War pension records filed on 15 Mar 1869, Shelby H Aliff (Aliff, Shelby Hart (WC146546)) had only two living minor children, Lucinda A Aliff and Sabra V Aliff.

Another child, Samuel had died before the pension application was filed. The pension papers for Thomas W Aliff (Aliff, Thomas W (WC106775)) shows his living minor children were James R S Aliff and Florence J Aliff. The pension documents can be found on Fold3.

These documents offer proof that James Russell Aliff was the son of Thomas W Aliff and Lucinda Burns. Shelby Aliff and Thomas W Aliff are brothers. Both men died in 1863 while serving in the Civil War of diseases contracted while in this service.

Please note that Shelby Aliff born to James Aliff and Nancy White is not the same man as Shelby Hart Aliff and has been confused with Shelby Hart Aliff. It is Shelby Aliff (not Hart) who is the brother of Thomas W. Aliff. The family Bible is found under

James Aliff 996D-65F on Family Search and includes the birth years and days of the children. There are still some errors that are being fixed regarding this issue. The Shelby Aliff born to James Aliff and Nancy White was born October 19, 1831, four years prior to Shelby Hart Aliff. His wife is listed as Lydia O. Aliff in the 1860 census, Marion Township, Harrison, Missouri. They were both born in Indiana and there is a 7 year difference in their ages. This gives him a birth date of 1831/1832 and "Lidia" a birth year of 1838/1839. They have one daughter listed, Lucinda A. Aliff, six months old, born in Missouri. Shelby's brother, Sampson is living with them as well. He was born in Indiana.
