Hughes, A.D. (Dale)

A.D. (Dale) Hughes
Services: Friday, Feb. 21, 10 a.m.

Services will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Chapel, 3700 River Blvd., Friday, February 21, at 10:00 a.m. for Dale Hughes. Pastor Guy Hoss and Kern County Veterans Association will officiate.

Dale Hughes was born October 30, 1925, in Valliant, OK, to Monroe and Rosa Ann Hughes. He was the 11th of their 14 children. In the late 1930s, the family came to California during the great Dust Bowl migration. Dale attended Kern County Union High School and worked in the cotton fields. He served in the Army Air Force from 1943 to 1946, during World War II, and was trained as a fighter pilot. His love of planes and flying continued throughout his life. For 20 years he was the proud owner of a Cessna 182 airplane, which he kept in mint condition. Dale worked for Chevron for 34 years. He retired in 1986 from his position as foreign training coordinator, a job he greatly enjoyed because it brought people to Bakersfield from all over the world. He made many friends through his work with whom he kept in touch many years after retirement. He enjoyed weekly breakfasts with the Chevron bunch. Dale loved getting together with family and friends, often inviting them over on the spur of the moment to barbecue, play music, or just sit and visit. He had an inventors mind and enjoyed many pastimes, including oil painting, motorcycle riding, guitar and banjo playing, letter writing, traveling the U.S., playing blackjack in Laughlin, and tinkering in his garage.

Dale is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Lorenza; and by five children and their spouses, Richard and Laural Hughes of Dickson, TN, Carolyn and Douglas Lopes of Centerville, TN, Michael and Susan Hughes of Lake Isabella, Laura and Brian Haywood of Bakersfield, and Theresa and Wayland Louie of Fremont. He also is survived by 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and four of his brothers and sisters, Ruby Berridge, Bud Hughes, Oneta Stults, and Jewell McDonald. A very special niece, Debra Gonzalez, assisted daily with Dales medical care during and after his hospitalization.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, February 20, 2003, at Greenlawn Mortuary, 3700 River Boulevard. Pallbearers will be Roger Gonzalez, Christopher Hawley, Brian Haywood, Eric Hughes, Wayland Louie, and Neil Moralez. Honorary pallbearers include Michael Hughes, Richard Hughes, Dan Musser, and Vincent Tafoya.

Dales immediate family would like to thank our extended family and Dales many friends for the cards, kind words, and prayers they offered during his illness.
