Born in Eemnes, Utrecht, Netherlands, Rutger Schoonoord was the son of Everardus Schoonard and Geertje van 't Klooster. He married Grietje Krieger in 1837 in Eemnes. They had 10 children together, at least 4 died in the Netherlands. In 1853, John and Grietje Krieger, mother-in-law, Anna Hooijmans, and at least 3 (and maybe as many as 6) of his children emigrated to the United States. They settled in Cleveland, Ohio. Grietje died shortly after arrival sometime before 1855, and John then married Johanne "Anna" Fiering, a widow with a daughter, Sophia. John and Anna then had 7 children together.
