"The mayor of Skullbone, Jesse Landon Hampton, passed away tonight. There will never be another like him." From the family.

Judge Mark Agee:
"
I was sad to hear today about the death of Landon Hampton, the Mayor Emeritus of Skullbone. A gentleman, a friend, a character, and a Gibson County institution. We need and will miss men like Landon. May the Lord bring strength, guidance, and His peace to Mrs Ruby, and the family and friends of this good man."

Landon was a dear friend to all and became a pillar of the Skullbone Community. He and Ruby were two of the kindest people I ever met. Ruby is my cousin and Landon was like a father to all us that went to the famous Skullbone Store. You just never knew who would show up there. Many great musicians came as well as local, regional and state officials. When Governor Gordon Browning ran for reelection as governor of Tennessee, a huge banner was hung across the intersection of 105 and Shades Bridge Road. When Colonel Browning was in England, he was asked about whether Skullbone existed or not. The colonel assured them it was indeed a town and that he loved going there. A true landmark, but without Ruby and Landon it was just another store. They breathed life into that establishment which was known worldwide.

He was legendary in north Gibson County. Landon always helped any in need and met all customers and friends with a warm smile. He cared about all who went there and if he asked "how are you doing?" he meant it. He took great interest in Skullbone Music Park when it opened and many performers would stop at his store including Willie Nelson, Charlie Daniels, the Rolling Stones and many others. The place had a draw on it because of the couple who ran it. Skullbone was already known before Ruby and Landon took over the store, however these two made it famous.

"Funeral services for Jesse Landon Hampton, age 84, will be held on Wednesday July 22, 2020 at 2 p.m. at Hunt Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Gene Rollins, and Dylan McMinn officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
