Mother was Christine Freeze Hoover, born around 1824. Children from her marriage to Absalom included: William Marcus Hoover, Penelope Catherine (Edison), Elizabeth (Freeze), Martha, Sarah (Bass), Mashack Hoover.

The family were farmers in Iredell County on census of 1850, 1860 and 1870 and included Irena E / Elizabeth Hoover. In 1870 she reported herself a weaver.
