Daughter of John Jr. and Lois (Atwater) Upson. Second wife and widow of Benjamin Chapman, married in Hartford County, Connecticut, on Sept. 25, 1792.

According to documents filed with the DAR, Sylvia's date of death was March 7, 1723 (this was Benjamin Chapman's date of death); however, she was still living on the family farm and was listed as head of household during the 1830 US Census. This is confirmed by a passage in the book, Memorial Record of the Counties of Delaware, Union and Morrow, Ohio, The Lewis Publishing Co., Chicago, IL: 1895 pp 391-392 (no author or editor named):

"On a farm at that place [Sharon Township, near Worthington, Franklin County, OH] Benjamin Chapman and his wife passed the rest of their days. He died March 7, 1823 and she survived him a number of years."

"They had a family of children as follows: Roswell R.; Albert, MD, who practiced his profession in Franklin county, Ohio, many years, died at the age of eighty nine; Mary, wife of Dixon Mitchell died in Union county; Sarah, wife of Aaron Mitchell, in Logan county; Henry, a steamboat captain on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers died in Van Buren, Arkansas; Lucinda, wife Aaron Mitchell, died in Columbus Ohio; Sylvia died at De Groff, Ohio; and Harriet, wife of Ira Reynolds, died in Seneca county Ohio." p. 392

Note: The above paragraph was probably based on oral history, and contains some known inaccuracies: daughters Sylvia Chapman, Lucinda (Chapman) Mitchell, Sarah (Chapman) Mitchell, and Harriet (Chapman) Reynolds all died in Logan County, OH, and are interred in Greenwood Cemetery in that county. One son, Lucius Chapman (b. 1812 and still alive in 1823) is not accounted for.

Roswell allegedly died on a steamer ship in the south, where he had gone for his health (suffered tuberculosis), died on Dec. 13, 1827, and was buried in Natchez, MS. He may have been in the company of his brother Henry at the time. [According to Worthington Memory.org, "Roswell R. Chapman's death is recorded in the Records of the City Sexton of Natchez, Mississippi, transcription in the George Armstrong Library, Natchez, Mississippi." They believe he had gone to Natchez for trade purposes related to his grocery and dry goods business.]
