In Memoriam

Laird - Mary Louise, daughter of Rev. A. F. and Lilla McClure Laird died of typhoid fever at the "Manse" in Winona, Miss., at 6 o'clock a. m., November 20th. 1902, after an illness of three weeks. She was born at Mill Gap, Highland County, Va., Dec 23d. 1881. She came to her Southern home, where her family had preceded her about one year, just two months before her blessed Lord called her to her heavenly rest. Being a child of the covenant, at the early age of ten she gave her heart to the Savior and consecrated her young life to His service, uniting with the Mt. Horeb Presbyterian church, Augusta County, Va. From this time forth she was ever ready with her life and voice to praise Him who redeemed her.

As soon as she came to Winona, she identified herself with every line of church work. She became a member of the Sabbath school and of the choir where she rendered willing and excellent service.

She received her education in Virginia, her native state, and taught there successfully three sessions.

She was a young woman of highest excellence of character and charming personality cultured, refined and exceedingly bright, genial and amiable. One who had the opportunity and privilege of knowing her well, says "Altogether she was one of the most lovely young women I have ever known. As an evidence of this, l can safely say that no one ever lived in this community, who, in so short a time, had taken such a hold upon the esteem and affectious of the community without regard to age, sex or denomination." By the grace of God she was what she was. "I heard a voice from Heaven saying unto me, write blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: yea saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors, and their works do follow them."

Her funeral from the Presbyterian church was attended by a large con course of sympathizing end sorrowing friends who followed the bier to the city cemetery where they laid to rest her sacred remains, in the hope of a glorious resurrection.
