Homelake resident Mary Baldwin "Jackie" Jackson Kinney, 90, died March 10, 2003 at the Rio Grand Hospital in Del Norte. Mary was born in Roanoke, Va., on Oct. 28, 1912, the second child of Mark Roberts and Elizabeth Baldwin Jackson. After graduating from junior College with a secretarial degree, Mary "Jackie" Jackson took flying lessons before World War II. She joined the Civil Air Patrol in 1940 and then became interested in the Women Airforce Service Pilots, which was an elite group of women pilots.
She first applied for admission in Roanoke, but was turned down because she was too short. On the day of her physical she ate a half dozen bananas to add weight, then stood discreetly on her toes when they measured her height. She was accepted and served with the WASP until their division was disbanded.
She continued to fly after the war, buying used planes throughout the United States and flying them back to her employer in Wilmington, Del. It was there that she met George Allison Kinney, whom she married on Sept. 17, 1946. together they lived in the West Chester, Penn., area until May 1999, when they moved to Alamosa to live near their daughter. Ultimately they would live in the Colorado State Veteran's Home at Homelake.
Surviving are one daughter, Elizabeth Baldwin Kinney, who is a physician in Alamosa; her sister, Susan Whittemore of New Town, Pa.; and one nephew, Justin block Kinney, who is studying physics at Princeton, N.J.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 53 years, and her first child Don Allison Kinney.
Cremation was performed at the Rogers Family Mortuary Crematory and a Memorial Service will be held at 10a.m. Thursday, March 27 at the Colorado State Veteran's Center chapel.
Arrangements are by Rogers Family Mortuary of Monte Vista.
