SULLIVAN, Nov. 17--Joseph Ray one of Moultrie county old and well known resident, died at his home on N.Hamilton street in the city, Monday evening at 8 oclock after an illness of eight weeks.
Joseph Ray was born in Jackson county, Ohio, Dec. 24,1833 where he resided until 1856, when he came to Shelby county,locating near Shelbyville. From Shelby county he came to Moultrie county where he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Daniel on Jan.4,1860. To this union were born seven children. Six of whom with the wife and mother are left, all of whom were at his bedside when he died. They are Henry C. Ray, J.W.Ray, E.T.Ray,P. H Ray, and F.M.Ray of Sullivan and Mrs.Amy Gibbon of Lovington.
Mr.and Mrs.Ray lived on a farm until eighteen years ago he and his family moved to Sullivan into the property he had purchased of Z.B.Whitfield, Sr. on N.Hamilton street and where he has continuously resided.
Joseph Ray was honest and upright in all his dealing with his fellow men and was highly respected by everyone in the community. He was a devoted and conscientious member of the local M.E.church and when able was always in his place at all the different church services. He united with the U. B.church in 1870 but after commng to Sullivan he transferred his membership the the M.E.church.
The funeral services will be held at the residence,Wednesday at 10 oclock,conducted by Dr.T.J.Wheat, after which the body will be laid to rest in the Kellar cemetery near Lovington.
