George J. Comstock was born March 8, 1839 and died at his home near McFarland March 15, 1912, having been severely burned March 9 at the Noller Brothers store in McFarland. He was found by W.C. Noller in the side room of the store where he had fallen against an oil stove and upset it. Noller happened to come in the store just before 9 p.m. to use the phone and found Comstock breathing the smoke and flame from the stove. Fortunately, his clothing did not catch fire, but his face and hands were quite badly burned. Comstock married Laura E. Foster Jan. 11, 1860, in New York. They were parents of Minnie L., who died Oct. 28, 1869, Della E., Marion L., and Louis G. Laura died Jan. 3, 1876, and he married Flora M. Jones Sept. 22, 1880, at Grantville, Kan. To this union were born four sons, Ona G., Bitler C., Carl F., and George. Mr. Comstock had been a resident of this Wabaunsee County since 1880 and had scores of friends. He was a genial and generous friend, honest and square in his business dealings, and had acquired a fine home and property."
