Ana Katrina Aufderheide ("Aki") 18, of Serendipity Lane in Wilton CT died Saturday June 22, 1991 at home. Born in Weston, Aki, daughter of George W. Aufderheide of Wilton and the late Helen Hinchliffe Aufderheide (1988) was a member of the graduation class of Wilton High School, where she was a member of the diving and lacrosse teams. She was a resident of Wilton since 1985 and was a member of Young Life. Young life is a Christian ministry that reaches out to Middle School, High School, and College aged kids in all 50 of the United States as well as more than 100 countries around the world.

She is also survived by her stepmother, Gayle Aufderheide of Wilton, maternal grandmother, Helen Hersey Hinchliffe of Saddle River, NJ and 6 brothers: George of Fairfield, Thomas of Sprinfield, Mass, Andrew of Newton, Steven of Madison and John of Taos New Mexico and William of Weston. Also two sisters, Susan of Ashland Oregon and Amy Lujan of Norwalk. Also two stepbrothers, Scott Rochlin of Westport and Matthew Rochlin of Fairfield, a stepsister Samantha Rochlin of Westport and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated in the Sacred Heart R.C. Church of Georgetown with Rev. James J. Dennis, pastor, officiating. Internment was private. Bouron Funeral Home in Georgetown was in charge of arrangements.

Aki died two weeks after she graduated from Wilton High School. From on line library archive lookup: " Aufderheide, Ana K. Wilton parents react to suicide by student, H 7/2/91 p4". "Grief was written on the faces of parents in the audience as they listened to Dr. Mark Banschick, child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist, discuss adolescent suicide. Many of the audience knew Ana and the doctor suggested a "closing" ceremony was needed such as a memorial service of tree planting in her memory. He suggested the family could discuss the particulars to end rumors. The differences between normal emotional outbreaks and those that are signs of suicide were discussed. The doctor said members of a senior class are "at risk" because they are going to colleges and jobs for the first time. Further, the loss of her mother in 1988 may have contributed as the loss of a parent is a high risk. As young adults, they do not yet understand that depression comes to an end in the normal course of time and try to "kill the pain". All warning signs shared with friends should be reported as 8 out of 10 people who discuss suicide usually do commit it.
