EDITH M. HAZARD, 89, died Aug. 19, 2001, at the Anchorage home of her daughter after a year of declining health due to cancer. A service was at First United Methodist Church in Fort Collins, Colo. Mrs. Hazard was interred with full military honors at Fort Logan National Cemetery near Denver.

She was born Edith Mae Theye on Jan. 30, 1912, in Lyon, Kan., to LaFayette and Mahala Theye. She graduated from the Emporia State Business College and worked for many years at the Lyon County Bank. In 1943, Mrs. Hazard joined the Women's Army Auxillary Corps and was one of the first 120 women commissioned into the U.S. military service. While stationed at Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois, she met Oscar Hazard. They married in 1949 and lived most of their lives in Belleville, Ill., and Denver and Fort Collins, Colo. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church. Her family wrote: ''Farming, banking, military career, homemaker, secretary and finally a retirement of volunteering for a variety of organizations in Fort Collins filled Edith's life. After a lifetime of caring for the needs of others, she graciously accepted the family's care and moved to Anchorage a year ago to live with her daughter's family.'' Mrs. Hazard was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Hazard; brother, Glenn Theye; and sister, Dorothy Hanzelius.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Mark Sickles of Anchorage; son, Gordon ''Hap'' Hazard of Fort Collins; grandchildren, Jessica Sicles, Erica Sicklels and Hans Sickles; sister, Emily Jane Goodholm; brother, Edward Theye; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial bequests may be made to Hospice of Anchorage. Arrangements were by Anchorage Funeral Home and the Warren-Bohlender Funeral Chapel, Fort Collins.

Wife of Oscar Travis Hazard. Daughter of LaFayette and Mahala Theye, nee Rector. Served in WW2 in WAAC, WAC and WAF reaching the rank of Captain. Her ashes are buried next to Oscar's.
