Charlie, age 82, died December 14, 2006, in Yuma, Ariz. For the past 30 years he and wife Marguerite had lived in Boise, where they were active members in the El Korah Shrine and enjoyed snowmobiling. Marguerite was an avid golfer and enjoyed the sport for many years. She got a hole-in-one at the Boise Ranch Golf Course, an accomplishment she was quite proud of. When they retired, they spent many winters enjoying the sunshine and the warmth of their friends in Yuma, Ariz. Marguerite continued to play golf and became president of the Mesa del Sol Ladies Golf League. They loved their dogs - Collies, Airedales and most recently her Shih Tzu "Maggie". Charlie graduated from Astoria (Oregon) High School and began a 22-year career with the U.S. Army. While on leave he met Marguerite Knutson, in Westport, Wash. They were wed on Jan. 31, 1947, and raised four sons. During W.W. II, he served in North Africa, Italy and France as a medic near the front lines. After the Army, he spent 20 years in a second career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. During their life as a military family, they traveled across the United States and through Europe. They are survived by Marguerite's sister Elizabeth (Harold), sons Ron (DJ), Charles (Mary), Thomas (Dawnelle), Robert (Valarie), grandchildren Matthew, Christopher (Nicole), Maija (Ernest), Marla, Paul (Angie), Samantha, and great-grandchildren Danielle, Michael, and Garrett. A graveside memorial service for both Charlie and Marguerite will be held at noon, Sunday, April 15, at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton, Ore. Remembrances: the Scholarship Fund, United Finnish Kaleva Brothers and Sisters, Lodge #9, in c/o Eleanor Clapp-Shumaker, 3119 Hudson St., Longview, WA, 98632.
