His early education was in the public school, and a seminary at Nora Springs, Iowa.
He married Aug. 29, 1893, to Edith Ward at Burr Oak, Iowa, and together, for more than 62 years, they maintained their home, raised their family and gave of their time and energy toward a better community wherever they were.
Six children were born to this couple, one of whom, Alva, died in infancy.
He is survived by his widow, Edith, five children, Donna (Mrs. Bruce M. Snell, Sr. of Ida Grove); Rex Potter of Patterson, N.J.; Ethel (Mrs. Don Forney of St. Petersburg, FL.); Herbert Potter of Anoka, Mn.; Edwin "Ward" Potter of Anoka, Mn.; 9 grandchildren, Mrs. Hugh Vickerstaff, Mrs. Robert Snell, Jr.; Mrs. Robert Irwin; Mrs. James Churney, Robert Potter; Marilyn Potter; Dennis Potter; Gary Potter; and 6 great grandchildren, Ann & Paul Vickerstaff, Karen & James Keller, Vicki Irwin; and Anthony Churney.
Mr. & Mrs Potter came to Ida County in 1898 and have lived in the county ever since. Mr. Potter farmed for 11 years, operated a hardware store in Arthur for 14 years, and a grocery store in Ida Grove for 21 years. During the last several years while in retirement from business, he has led a full and active life with his family, his church, his fraternal organizations, and his friends. He has been a faithful member of the Methodist Church for many years.
