Matriculating from New Canton to Hampden-Sydney, he was there from 1858 through 1860, when he left to attend VMI. He was Captain of the Fluvanna Artillery until 1862, when he was discharged due to dysentery and debility. After the War, he was a farmer, lawyer and judge of the county court.
