Sarah was born on March 29, 1848 in Athens, Ala.--Limestone Co. She was from a large family of 12 children , the 9th child to be born, to Peterson Tanner and his wife Sarah Chaffin Redus (Chaffin: a family maiden name even passed down to Madeline Chaffin Tanner Dinning, Helena, Ark.--Phillips Co.). Sarah grew up in Athens among a host of relatives and many in the Athens City Cemetery-- where Peterson and wife Sarah would be buried.

Sarah met and married Capt. John D. Mitchell and somehow they went Helena, Ark.--Phillips Co. along with her brother, Thomas Jefferson Tanner. Thomas would marry Sue "Susie" Ann Burnett of Helena, Ark. in Helena. Their daughter, Madeline,would have the "Chaffin" middle name. All 5 of them are buried in Maple Hill Cemetery, Helena, Ark.--Phillips Co.
