Enlisted in the 1st Minnesota Inf, Co. H, in April 1861. Was captured by the Confederates at the First Battle of Bull Run, and spent 11 months in Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia as a prisoner-of-war.

Married Nancy Elgin Burton sometime after the end of the Civil War, probably in Minnesota.
