She was a child care provider that provided care to 300+ children during her life. She belonged to Zion Mennonite Church in Broadway. She enjoyed gospel music and concerts, camping and family get togethers.
She is survived by five daughters, 21 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, two brothers and six sisters. Her daughter, Debbie Landes, died in 2018.
Aunt Shirley was married to my grandmother's brother. I only met her twice - at the funerals of my grandparents in 1999 and 2004. But in my adventures over the past 21 years I always sent her (and Uncle Ray, when he was alive) postcards from wherever on the east coast I happened to be, from New England down to Georgia. She kept me up on Kuykendall news in notes and letters, and we swapped Christmas cards. She always wrote in them that I should come see her sometime. I wish I had been able to!
Aunt Shirley's father was a well known local historian down in Rockingham Co. and I have one of his books. Aunt Shirley was related to me on both sides of my family, both as my Uncle Ray's wife, and a lot more distantly on the other side. But I don't think there is anyone else I can say that about!
I will miss sending her postcards when I am out, and I will miss getting notes in the mail from her.
