Carol J Schaben, 79, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2020, at Benton House of Lenexa which was her home since 2017. Family and friends may pay their respect at Johnson Count Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, KS on Thursday, July 9, 2020 from 3:00 - 5:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Carol’s memory may be directed to Ascend Hospice, Attn Beth Executive Director, C/O Carol Schaben, 4550 W 109th Street, Overland Park, KS 66207.

Carol was born September 11, 1940, in Bison, KS to John and Monica Unrein. She was the oldest of three children. She graduated from LaCrosse High School in LaCrosse, KS.

Carol spent her first 19 years in Western Kansas enjoying a very large extended family.

At 19 years old Carol married Tom Schaben, also a native of Western Kansas. They settled in Independence Missouri. Tom & Carol were “suitcase” farmers; working in Kansas City Monday thru Friday and farming in Bazine, Kansas on the weekends.

Carol worked in the commercial insurance industry for Chubb Insurance for 38 years. She began her career as an audit clerk and retired as an Operations Service Manager. Carol was very active in the Greater Kansas City Insurance Association for many years and was named Insurance Woman of The Year in 1989.

After, retiring from Chubb Insurance in 1998, Carol began a second career as the Business Manager for Nativity of Mary Catholic Parish and Grade School in Independence, MO for several years. She was a member of Nativity of Mary Catholic Church and served as a Eucharistic minister for many years.

Carol also helped found the Jackson County Free Health Clinic of Independence MO in 2000. Carol coordinated volunteer doctors, nurses, pharmacists and support staff. The Clinic served economically disadvantaged individuals in Independence, MO with medical and prescription needs every week.

Carol is survived by her daughter & son in law, Patti & Mike Bryant, and grandson & wife, Brent & Danielle Haskell, Ansonia, OH.
