Joe McDowell, 77, of Elkhart, died at 4:30 a.m. today in his home following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in Hassell & Foster Chapel with Dr. H. M. Ward and the Rev. Robert Moran officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Memories, Elkhart.
Pallbearers will be Benton Knott, Joe Bailey Parker, Tim Peters, Artis Mosley, Rex Puckett and Bill Bible.
Joseph Edward McDowell was born Aug. 3, 1899, in Hardy, Neb. He was reared in Nebraska and graduated from the University of Nebraska. He moved in Anderson County in 1930 and had been a resident of Elkhart for 40 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church Christian Men's Fellowship and Baptist Men, Elkhart Lodge 400 AF & AM, Sharon Temple Shrine in Tyler and Howard Gardner American Legion Post in Palestine.
During World War I, he served in both the Army and Navy. For many years, he was an oil lease broker and for 28 years, he was a Mobil agent in Elkhart.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Lucille Watkins McDowell of Elkhart; a son, Lt. Col. J. C. (Sonny) McDowell of Austin' two daughters, Mrs. Gerald (Bessie Marie "Sissie") Durnell of Elkhart and Mrs. Norman (Mary Katherine) Ewbank of Midland; five grandchildren, Geri Lynn Durnell, Kath Ewbank, Edward Lee Ewbank, Cole McDowell and Duke McDowell; a great grandson, Joe Ewbank and several nieces and nephews. Condolence calls will be received at the McDowell residence, Elkhart.
