Mr. Fife was born in 1822, on a farm near Bethel, North St. Clair township, Allegheny county, and received his education in the public schools. After leaving school, he devoted his attention to farming until 1850, when he was appointed deputy sheriff of Allegheny county, which office he held until he was elected sheriff in 1876, serving one term. he was sheriff during the riots of 1877 and performed his duty throughout that trying period with the highest credit. When he became sheriff, he removed from Bethel to Mansfield, removing later to Washington street, Hazelwood, and then to Highland avenue. When his term as sheriff expired, he was appointed to a position in the office of the superintendent of police in the Department of Public Safety, which position he retained until about two years ago, when he retired to private life and resided with his son, F. H. Fife, at 4337 Second avenue.
In 1850, he married Amanda Rowland, daughter of John B. Rowland, who was county treasurer in 1850. Five children were born to this union, a daughter, who died in infancy; Dr. J.R. Fife, a prominent physician of Lawrenceville, who died in 1892; Charles, who died in 1900, and F. H. Fife, who is married and lives at the family residence with his wife and children.
Mr. Fife attended the United Presbyterian church. Funeral services will be held tomorrow evening at 7:30 o'clock at his residence, and interment will be private on Wednesday morning at Bethel.
