John was captured July 3, 1863 near Fairfield, Pennsylvania (an encounter associated with the fighting at Gettysburg) after being shot in the hip.
John was sent to the Union prison at Ft. Delaware. His name appeared on a muster roll of paroled and exchanged prisoners at Camp Lee (near Richmond, VA) dated March 1, 1865.
The bullet was never removed.
